Onderzoek

Joyce is geïnteresseerd in onderzoek naar het gebruik en het ontwerp van teksten in een professionele context. Ze doet onderzoek naar welke karakteristieken van een tekst ervoor zorgen dat de lezers die tekst makkelijker kunnen begrijpen en gebruiken. Een voorbeeld hiervan is haar onderzoek naar welke informatie mensen nodig hebben als ze instructies of gebruiksaanwijzingen lezen. In haar onderzoek naar het ontwerp van teksten maakt Joyce gebruik van gebruikersgerichte methoden (User Centerd Design-methoden). Dit betekent dat de gebruiker betrokken wordt bij alle stappen van het ontwerpproces.

Joyce is betrokken bij het Center for eHealth Research and Disease Management. Binnen het EurSafety Health-net-project doet ze onderzoek naar het ontwerp van een communicatieplatform over infectieziekten dat als doel heeft de patiëntveiligheid in de grensregio te vergroten.

Promovendi

Joyce is betrokken bij twee promotieprojecten:

Binnen het EurSafety Health-net project is Joyce betrokken bij het promotieproject van Jobke Wentzel. Jobke onderzoekt met behulp van Human Centered Design-methoden hoe een communicatieplatform gericht op het verminderen van infectieziekten eruit moet zien.

Mark Evers is een buitenpromovendus. Joyce begeleidt hem bij zijn onderzoek naar de bruikbaarheid van interfaces om grote machines te bedienen. Ook hij gebruikt Human Centered Design-methoden om te onderzoeken welke inhouds- en vormkenmerken de interfaces moeten hebben om optimaal bruikbaar te zijn.

Internationale ervaring

In 2006 heeft Joyce vier maanden onderzoek gedaan bij de afdeling Technical Communication (nu: afdeling Human Centered Design and Engineering) van de University of Washington in Seattle (USA). Daar heeft ze onderzoek gedaan naar de structuur van instructieve teksten op het internet.

In het het najaar van 2000 heeft Joyce een deel van haar promotieonderzoek uitgevoerd bij de afdeling Psychology van de University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada.
