Research

During her doctoral research, Suzanne Janssen investigates informal workplace mentoring. An informal mentorship is a relationship, in which knowledge, experience and psychosocial support is transmitted through face-to-face communication between a person with more knowledge or experience (the mentor) and a person with less knowledge or experience (the protégé). Sometimes this relationship is program-based (formal mentoring), but many employees are involved in one or more informal mentorships. Mentoring is associated with benefits for the mentor, the protégé, and the organisation. Although there are many publications about mentoring, there is not much theory-driven research. This research project contributes to mentoring literature in several ways.

At the moment, Suzanne Janssen is conducting a study in which she tries to distinguish informal mentoring from other developmental relationships, using biographical interviews.
