Research

The research Niels Baas is conducting is mainly focused children’s (from elementary schools) behaviour in the online world. This research mainly concerns online risk behaviour, particularly focused on cyber bullying. The research approach is to study children in a way they themselves appreciate and understand. After all children are the experts in the online world. That’s why Baas, in his research, is focused on their perspectives.

Although it seems like we already know most about children, in practice still very little research is being conducted on children’s perspectives. Besides that, too often children are being studied using pre-structured methods like the questionnaire. A research method which might not directly be suitable because of its lack of fit with the children’s vocabulary and lifestyle.

In his studies Baas applies creative, qualitative and above all child-suitable research methods. An example of this is the recently finished study using a participatory approach (origine: grounded theory/ grassroots approaches). In this study the children completed topic related assignments, discussed the problems with peers and had group conversations which were facilitated by the researcher. Several projective techniques and enabling techniques were also applied. The participatory approach is mainly concerned with creating a situation of mutual learning. In the example research case the children were empowered by participating in the research project, while the researcher learned by observing and facilitating the project.
