·	De psychologie van preventief gezondheidsgedrag en de ontwikkeling van effectieve interventies om preventief gezondheidsgedrag te bevorderen.

Het onderzoek richt zich op de verdere ontwikkeling van sociale cognitie modellen, zoals de Theory of Planned Behaviour, de Protectie Motivatie Theorie en het Prototype Wilingness Model. Deze sociale cognitie modellen beschrijven de relaties tussen sociale cognities (persoonlijke opvattingen) en preventief gezondheidsgedrag. Doel van het onderzoek is na te gaan in hoeverre deze modellen bruikbaar zijn bij jongeren in verschillende culturen en welke invloed culturele variabelen, sociale omgeving en persoonlijkheidsvariabelen hebben op het ontstaan van gunstige of juist ongunstige opvattingen over gewenst gezondheidsgedrag.

Onderzoek

Er zijn drie onderzoekslijnen te onderscheiden:

1) Sociale cognitiemodellen en HIV preventief gedrag van jongeren in ontwikkelingslanden, vooral in Afrika (in samenwerking met G. W. Bogale, H. Gebreeyesus Hadera). Huidige project:

- The development, implementation and evaluation of the effects of radio HIV/AIDS prevention messages for rural girls and women in the Amhara region in Ethiopia (PhD project of Gebeyehu W. Bogale, Educational Media Agency, Addis Ababa, Ethiopië). Funded by The Netherlands Fellowship Programme (Nuffic).

2) De relatie tussen persoonlijkheid, sociale cognities en middelengebruik. Het onderzoek richt zich vooral op overmatig alcoholgebruik ‘binge drinking’ en het gebruik van drugs door jongeren in Westerse landen (in samenwerking met M.E. Pieterse). Het persoonlijkheidskenmerk ‘sensation seeking’ speelt bij deze gedragingen een belangrijke rol. Het onderzoek richt zich op de vraag in welke mate er sprake is van een direct effect is van ‘sensation seeking’ op het gedrag en van een indirect effect, waarbij door veranderingen in sociale cognities sensation seeking bijdraagt aan het bevorderen overmatig alcoholgebruik en drugsgebruik bij jongeren.

3) Opvatting van zorgconsumenten over het gebruik van e-health (in samenwerking met J.E.W.C. Van Gemert-Pijnen). Het onderzoek richt zich vooral op de rol van sociale cognities bij het gebruik en de toepassing van e-health door zorgconsumenten.
