·	Qualitative and narrative research methodology: how to do good qualitative research? (methods) How to think about good research? (methodology)

·	Narrative psychology: the role of stories in strenghtening resilience and promoting (mental) health

·	Storying the future: the role of stories (scenarios) about the future, and other ways of imagining how life could be, in promoting (mental) health and resilience.

·	Existential psychology: psychology focused on the importance of meaning making processes and dealing with the “condition humaine”.

Research projects

The development of narrative research methodology for the creation and realisation of possible healthy selves and worlds

(part of the life story lab at Twente University, directed by Ernst Bohlmeijer, in cooperation with Gerben Westerhof and others).

This study is aimed at the psychological function of ‘what if’ stories (stories on desired, possible lives). How can these stories be created? What is required from storytellers and their environment? What is required to make these stories happen?

The development of a small story method for counselling

(cooperation with Carmen Schuhmann and Bianca Lugten from the University for Humanistic Studies, Utrecht)

The study aims to gain insight and transparancy in what happens in interactions between counsellors and clients, for the purpose of quality enhancement and training. Additional questions: what is the potential of short, easy accessible counselling encounters? How can counselling benefit people with limited verbal and cognitive skills? How can new territory for health care be opened up, both within and outside traditional institutions?

Negotiating social change in an age of globalization: Belonging and resilience in urban areas in the UK and the Netherlands

(cooperation with Vanessa May and others from Manchester University, Tine Davids from the Radboud University Nijmegen, Ernst Bohlmeijer and Gerben Westerhof of Twente University)

How can citizens feel at home (again) in contemporary, continuously changing society? What is required for them to become resilient to deal with social change? Grant applied at NWO

Team stories of (health care) professionals using Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT)

(cooperation with Anne Marie Lohuis who writes her PhD thesis on this subject. Her supervisors are Ernst Bohlmeijer and Mark van Vuuren).

Solution-Focused Therapy has a focus on the future and strong qualities of clients. How do the principles of SFT come to fore in personal and team stories of professionals? This research will be accomplished at and in corporation with Aveleijn (www.aveleijn.nl), a health care organization for mentally disabled people.
