Ik ben vanaf 1 september 2008 door TNO aangesteld als bijzonder hoogleraar aan de UT voor een periode van vijf jaar. Ik zal één dag per week (vrijdag) aanwezig zijn.

Onderzoek

Mijn onderzoek aan de UT zal zich richten op ‘Vertrouwen in gezamenlijke informatiebestanden’ (zoals bijvoorbeeld Wikipedia). Het voorgenomen onderzoek is gebaseerd op bevindingen dat vertrouwen in systemen gebaseerd is op de vooraf bestaande neiging tot vertrouwen bij individuen en op het optreden van systeemfouten. Recente experimenten hebben laten zien dat mensen die een grotere neiging tot vertrouwen hadden maar geconfronteerd werden met een slecht-functionerend systeem, uiteindelijk het systeem het minst vertrouwden. Deze experimenten waren echter gebaseerd op gesloten, volledig geautomatiseerde systemen. Wij gaan doen naar vertrouwen in open informatiebestanden zoals Wikipedia. Het onderzoek richt zich op de vraag in hoeverre ervaring met dergelijke bestanden en individuele verschillen in geneigdheid tot vertrouwen het daadwerkelijke vertrouwen in gezamenlijke informatiebestanden beïnvloeden. Vertrouwen in informatiebestanden kan gebaseerd zijn op automatische algoritmes dan wel op heuristieken gebaseerd op ervaring. Het onderzoek zal eveneens het niveau van vertrouwen bepalen dat mensen hebben in algoritmes dan wel heuristieken.
