Strategic research themes

The Green Energy Initiative focuses currently on three research themes: ‘Energy from Biomass', 'ICT & Smart Grids’ and ‘Advanced Materials'.

Within all these themes there will be specific attention to behavioural, organisational and governance aspects.

Strategic research themes

Green coals

Energy from biomass

Researchers develop climate neutral fuels from waste from forest and agriculture. University of Twente was the first in the world to produce from this waste pyrolysis oil suitable to mix with traditional oil. ... read more

Smart Grids

ICT & Smart Grids

Smart grids are energy networks that can intelligently integrate the behaviour and actions of all units connected to it - generators, consumers and those that do both – in order to match the demand and the supply of energy in an efficient, sustainable, economic and secure way. ... read more

Advanced materials

Advanced Materials

Materials research, fundamental as well as applied, plays a central role in the development of more efficient and cost effective energy applications, such as fuel cells, solar cells, batteries, thermo-electrics, gas separators and systems for the production of solar fuels. ... read more

human touch

Behavioral, organisational, governance and ethical aspects

Innovative energy technologies not autonomously match routines and habits in society. Very often the behavioural, organisational or governance aspects are critical for successful implementation of technological innovations.
Therefore scientists from the various technical and social science disciplines work together on technological breakthroughs and their successful implementation. ... read more
