Professor Lefferts appointed Research Director Green Energy Initiative

As of 1 January 2013 Professor Leon Lefferts has been appointed Research Director of the Green Energy Initiative (GEI). The GEI is an initiative to coordinate the various activities concerning sustainability at the UT.

With the Green Energy Initiative a large number of scientific disciplines are currently collaborating on the themes ‘Energy from Biomass’, ‘ICT & Smart Grids’ and ‘Advanced Materials’. As it is vital that innovations are implemented successfully, considerable attention is being paid here to the relationship between technological innovation and behavioural, organizational and social scientific research. The GEI’s aim is to coordinate and fine-tune all related activities being undertaken by the research institutes involved.

Together with the Programme Director, Jan Emmerzaal, Lefferts will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the GEI. An important objective of the GEI is to enhance the UT’s profile with regard to renewable energy and sustainability in both the Netherlands and Europe. This involves a specific focus on sustainability and Green Energy in not only research and teaching but also with regard to extra-curricular student activities and conservation on campus.

The post of Research Director will run for a period of five years. Leon Lefferts will carry out this task on a part-time basis, alongside his appointments as Professor of Catalytic Processes and Materials at the Faculty of Science and Technology and as professor at Helsinki’s Aalto University.
