The Complete Energy Atlas

The past, present and future of energy mapped

The Complete Energy Atlas provides a comprehensive overview of the past, present and future of energy in the Netherlands. The University of Twente’s Green Energy Initiative also helped provide content for the atlas and made a financial contribution to the project. The Complete Energy Atlas is intended for a wide audience and is available in bookstores.

The Netherlands - a land built on energy

The Netherlands has a rich history of energy. Ever since the Golden Age, we have owed a large measure of our economic success to the extensive reserves of peat, coal, oil and gas that are available within our borders. That success continues to this very day, with the energy sector generating many billions every year and creating employment for tens of thousands. Energy is also important for the future of our country. Our coastal location, the strategic position of our seaports and the presence of gas and gas infrastructure all mean that the Netherlands is very well located as a European energy hub for natural gas, biomass, wind energy and others.

Using historical sources, current data and future scenarios, this atlas is a survey of energy in the Netherlands that covers the past, the present and the future. With hundreds of maps and magnificent aerial photographs by Karel Tomeï, the atlas demonstrates to a wide readership that energy has been, and will continue to be, a crucial building block for Dutch society.

Green Energy Initiative

A great deal of research is being carried out at the University of Twente in the field of renewable energy. This includes, for example, research into new materials for solar cells, how biomass can be used to generate energy and how to use ICT to create smart energy networks. All research in the field of renewable energy is brought together within the Green Energy Initiative partnership.

The Green Energy Initiative provided contributions to the Complete Energy Atlas in both financial and substantive terms. Working with five departments at Twente, data and images were provided including in the field of bio-energy, smart grids and high tech materials.
