Symposium to Celebrate 25 years of the International Short Course on Energy Management in Small and Medium Scale Industries (EMSI)

Energy Management: A Tool for Promoting Green Energy in Industry

University of Twente, 6th December 2012 (13:30 to 17:00)

Location: Building Ravelijn, room 2502

For industry to adopt a ‘green’ approach to its energy use requires informed decisions by management not only about the way that it uses energy but also about the type of energy a company uses. The former evaluates measures to promote energy efficiency while the latter evaluates the options for using alternatives to fossil fuels and non-grid electricity. Adopting an energy management strategy is a tool to help management make these decisions. The motivation for the measures adopted can vary from financial (reduced energy costs), to environmental (need to reduce emissions such as Carbon Dioxide) and social (awareness of customers sensitivity to ‘green issues’). Nevertheless, research shows that there is a significant ‘gap’ between recognising the benefits of energy management and reaping the rewards in small and medium scale industries. This is a global phenomenon.

This symposium seeks to demonstrate how energy management can aid small and medium scale industries to be greener in their use of energy. It will explore how to overcome the barriers, as what motivates stakeholders, at the policy and firm levels to adopt energy management strategies. Amongst the speakers are:

·

Stefan Walta (SenterNovem),

·

Edgar Cruz (SQConsult and past EMSI participant)

·

Dennis Lubbers (DSM Emmen and past EMSI participant)

·

EMSI 2012 participants

·

Joy Clancy

The symposium celebrates 25 years of capacity building through the international short course for Energy Management in Small and Medium Scale Industries (EMSI). The EMSI also forms part of CSTM’s Master of Environmental and Energy Management.
