Policy, practice and performance: the quest for gender equality in academia

In this presentation Yvonne Benschop will talk about the past, present and future of gender equality in academia. She will address the various policies that have been designed to counter gender inequality and will explain their lack of impact on everyday academic organizing. Dutch universities are increasingly confronted with international benchmarks that expose their backlog in this field. This builds the pressure to improve their performance in gender equality and opens the way for innovative measures and practices to accomplish that.

Yvonne Benschop is Professor of Organizational Behavior at the Nijmegen School of Management, affiliated with the Institute for Gender Studies at the Radboud University of Nijmegen. She is ‘born and bred’ at the Radboud University of Nijmegen, as she holds Masters degrees in Political Science and in Administration and Policy Sciences, and obtained her Ph.D. in Policy Sciences from the University of Nijmegen in 1996. Her dissertation examined the gender subtext of the Dutch banking sector. Her main inspirations are feminist organization studies and critical management studies. Current research interests include the organizational changes brought about by gender mainstreaming and the gendering dynamics of networking and impression management. She is an associate editor of Gender, Work and Organization and serves on the editorial boards of Scandinavian Journal of Management, International Sociology, the Dutch Journal of Gender Studies and Equal Opportunities International. Publications in English include articles in Organization Studies, Accounting, Organization and Society, The International Journal of Human Resource Management and Gender, Work and Organization.
