Third Attempt Regulation

According to the Education and Examination Regulations, any student who failed to pass a subject so far and wants to take the examination for the third time should obtain permission to do so from the examination board.

This should take place by submitting a request, which must be signed by the study adviser and the teacher of the subject, accompanied by a letter of motivation including reflection and a work plan, and a study plan. With regard to this, the following rules will apply as from the academic year 2012-2013:

-

In the quarter in which the subject is taught, a complete request for a third examination opportunity has to be submitted before the start of the quarter.

-

For a resit in the next quarter, the request has to be submitted within two weeks after the publication of the unsatisfactory mark.

-

For a resit in later quarters, the request has to be submitted before the start of the quarter.

It is important that a student takes action as soon as it is clear that he/she will need a third examination attempt. He/she immediately has to contact the teacher and the study adviser, and submit a request for registration to the examination board within the time mentioned above. The examination office will only register the student for the subject concerned after the examination board has given its consent.

Method/procedure

Time schedule

Action

Essential to take action before the start of the quarter*

-

Reflect on what went right/wrong in the previous two attempts. Examine the contents of the subject concerned in detail, and analyse which are the difficult parts for you.

-

Think of a work plan with regard to how you will prepare for the examination this time with a view to passing the subject, taking into account the results of your reflections. Draw up a detailed schedule as part of the work plan, in which you indicate per day or per week on which parts of the subject you will work, and how much time you intend to spend on that.

-

Fill in the form "third attempt". To this form, add your letter which should clearly demonstrate your motivation as well as the fact that you drew up a work plan on the basis of your reflections. Add the work plan as well. In addition, you have to indicate which subjects you intend to take in the quarter in which the third examination attempt will take place. With respect to the feasibility of the third attempt, it is important not to plan more than the standard study workload (15 ECs) for this quarter.

-

Then make an appointment with the teacher and the study adviser. It is important to follow a proper study approach right from the start of the teaching period. It is therefore recommended to contact them as soon as possible to discuss your letter of motivation.

-

After having dealt with any feedback, have the "third attempt" form signed by both the teacher and the study adviser.

Before the start of the quarter during which the subject is taught/within two week after the publication of the unsatisfactory mark (if the third attempt is a resit in the next quarter)

-

Submit the signed form + letter of motivation (including the work plan and time schedule) to the secretariat of the examination board. Both the study adviser and the teacher can advise the examination board.

asap

-

The examination board will deal with your request and inform you and BOZ on the result. Then BOZ will inform the study adviser and the teacher. In case of consent, the examination office will register you for the subject in question.

*If the subject you have to resit was taught in the preceding quarter, you should take action as soon as the result of your examination is made known. In addition to the actions mentioned above, we ask you to have a look at the examination you did, and to analyse your shortcomings. Please incorporate this into your work plan.

Important!

-

You are responsible yourself for this process. Even if late results, schedules, dates of examination meetings and the like cause a difficult time schedule.

-

You will have to be able to make a reasonable case for yourself for having exerted yourself for the subject if you want to be considered for tutoring.

-

Change of subject code, change of name etc. are irrelevant. It is the identity of the subject that counts.

-

It is advisable to be meticulous about the two attempts you have.

-

For any following examination attempt (4, 5, etc.) you always need to contact the study adviser. In these cases, the same requirements apply as in the case of a third examination attempt. See to it that you specifically reflect on the course of events at the third opportunity with this. Furthermore, you have to add a detailed overview of your study progress to these requests, so that the examination board can consider the request in its context. Attention:

Fourth and subsequent resits can only be taken in the quarter in which the subject is taught. Then the first rule applies once more: The request has to be submitted before the start of the quarter.

-

You have to submit a request for a third attempt per subject, so do not include more than one subject in a request.

-

The examination board may include in its consideration the fact that you are submitting/have submitted requests for more than one subject.

-

This regulation concerns written examinations, and possibly oral examinations as well. For projects, practicals, other rules apply.

-

It is compulsory to register for examinations via OSIRIS. You may deregister via OSIRIS until the start of the examination period. After that – until 24 hours before the examination – you have to deregister via the central desk of Student Services via studentservices@utwente.nl. If you have not deregistered, the registration will count as an attempt. It is prohibited to make the examination without registering.
