Biography

Ciska Heida, assistant professor at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering/Mathematics/Computer Science and the Institute for BioMedical Technology (BMTI) of the University of Twente (Netherlands), received the MSc and PhD degrees in electrical engineering in 1997 and 2002, respectively (both at the University of Twente). Currently her primary research interests focus on the application of deep brain stimulation (DBS) in movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease. Most therapies for brain disorders are still based on trial-and-error and effective mechanisms remain unknown. Mathematical and neurocomputational models play an instrumental role in bridging the gap between the brain and behavior. The combination with experimental research at the cellular and network level (brain slices) and patient level (movement tests), will help to unravel the underlying mechanisms of therapy and to develop and test new therapeutic strategies.
