The second prize of this year's KIVI NIRIA/UT essay competition of 2008, for which 17 students were nominated, has been awarded to Yang Gao. The KIVI/NIRIA/UT prize awards an excellent bachelor or internship thesis in an engineering/scientific field. Yang Gao, a student of Electrical Engineering, did his internship at Philips Research and designed several microfluidic devices that can be used for the continuous flow passive separation of bacteria from mammalian cells in biological samples. The background of this work is the development of new tools for the in vitro detection of infectious diseases, which could be used for point-of-care diagnostics devices. The realization of a passive sample preparation module with the ability for size-based separation has the potential to be a true enabler for automated point of care devices. The internship of Yang Gao was performed in close cooperation with the BIOS-Lab on a Chip group.
