Design smart solutions for industry and society using your engineering expertise
How can you apply your technical knowledge and creativity to solve complex challenges faced by today’s industries? How do you design smart, future-oriented solutions that benefit both businesses and society?
If these questions inspire you, the Engineering Doctorate (EngD) at the University of Twente is an excellent choice. This post-master's programme allows you to deepen your academic knowledge while working on a practical design project within an industrial environment. Throughout the programme, you are employed and receive a salary, either as an EngD trainee at the University of Twente or through your employer.
An EngD is a professional doctorate in engineering. You combine university courses with a design project in industry. You learn by doing and deliver real impact with companies and organisations.

An EngD combines courses with a design project in industry. You are employed as a trainee, receive a salary and work on a concrete problem that matters to a partner organisation.
You develop technical depth and project leadership, build a strong network with companies and research groups and create real impact. After graduation, many trainees move into senior roles in industry, while others continue with a PhD position.
As an EngD trainee, you are employed for 24 months and receive a salary. You combine learning and earning throughout the programme.

Both are third-cycle programmes but with different aims: EngD is practice-oriented and industry-focused. A PhD is research-oriented and university-based. The three main differences are:

After successful completion, you will be awarded the Engineering Doctorate (EngD) degree. EngD programmes are part of the third cycle of higher education in the Netherlands. The diploma is registered and kept by KIVI, the Royal Dutch Society of Engineers. This is not a Doctor title; you are entitled to use the degree, Engineering Doctorate, EngD.
"The flexibility the university of twente provides to pursue my EngD is phenomenal!"
Facing a technological problem or a complex design issue? An EngD trainee from the University of Twente brings academic insight into your organisation to design and deliver a practical solution.
Together, we scope a two-year project that blends courses at UT with design work in your company. You work with a salaried trainee guided by UT experts, with clear milestones and deliverables. Intellectual property on contract results remains with your company. Your own employees are also eligible for an EngD, provided their background is suitable
