Collaboration is the motto of the University of Twente.
This is not just the case on campus, but outside of it as well. The University of Twente (UT) is closely collaborating with other universities, companies and regional, national and, of course, international governments. UT keeps in close contact with her alumni and initiates - and is actively involved in - networks that focus on innovation and social progress.
Education and research consortia
The two largest university collaboration projects are the 4TU Federation (former 3TU.Federation), the collaboration project between the University of Twente, the Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) and starting 2016 also Wageningen University, and the ECIU, a European collaboration project by innovative universities. Together we combine our knowledge in the field of education, research and valorization in order to increase our innovative strength and use it to contribute to enhancing the position of the Dutch and European knowledge economy.
ERASMUS CHARTER FOR HIGHER EDUCATION
The University of Twente has been awarded by the European Commission with the official Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (ECHE). The award enables the university to participate in the Erasmus+ programme. The programme participation offers opportunities for international mobility actions for the entire UT community and its international partnerships. Through funds for individual mobilities within and beyond the European Union and for strategic, sustainable, innovative, and capacity-building cooperation projects, the programme offers UT opportunities to contribute to its internationalisation process, local and regional engagement and impact, and enhancement of the position and quality of innovation, education and research within the EHEA. Vrije Universiteit / University of Twente
After a successful start of a joint Bachelor's programme in Mechanical Engineering in 2019, the University of Twente (UT) and VU Amsterdam are expanding their cooperation in education, research and valorisation. We are building on an existing, unique form of cooperation based on social commitment and a comprehensive approach. A special feature of this cooperation is the integrated approach of alpha, beta and gamma sciences, combined with technology, to work on socially complicated problems, such as climate change or social inequality.
The aim is to offer a joint Master's specialisation in Sports Data Science in Twente starting in the new academic year of 2021-2022, which will also be offered in Amsterdam a year later. In addition to Mechanical Engineering, other technical bachelor's programmes will be offered in Amsterdam, starting with Creative Technology and Industrial Engineering & Management. The expansion of the curriculum fits the ambition to respond to the need of the labour market for highly educated technical people who have an eye for their contribution to society.
Previous research has shown that many prospective scholars with a technical profile choose non-technical Bachelor's programmes in the regions of Noord-Holland and Flevoland. One of the reasons is the lack of a university of technology in these regions. In 2019, UT and VU Amsterdam launched the Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering to prevent technical talent from being lost. The expansion of the educational offerings should persuade more young people to apply for a technical bachelor's course in Amsterdam.
International partnerships
We have a worldwide network at our disposal with regard to internships and exchange positions for our students. In addition, UT carefully selected specific International Partners in order to stimulate synergetic collaboration to improve the quality of research and education at UT.
Furthering knowledge
A third core task for universities, alongside education and research, is knowledge transfer. At UT, developed knowledge is effectively converted into economic industriousness. Our student businesses will become the spin-off companies of tomorrow. As an entrepreneurial university, we, therefore, consider it to be vitally important that entrepreneurship is promoted and supported at every level. Our activities related to entrepreneurship are mainly centred on Novel-T.
Through Pre-University we organise a large range of activities for secondary schools, and our researchers regularly participate in topical social discussions. UT's new Design Lab is an international work and meeting space where researchers, students, entrepreneurs, business developers, governments and artists together work towards creative out-of-the-box applications of new technologies.
