Clemens van Blitterswijk joins the Academy

Clemens van Blitterswijk, Professor of Tissue Regeneration and until recently Scientific Director of the University of Twente’s MIRA research institute, is one of the fourteen new members to be welcomed into the ranks of the Royal Dutch Academy of Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). The news has been announced by the Academy. The new members will be installed on 12 September.

The Academy assures the quality and defends the interests of the Arts and Sciences and acts as an advisory body to the Dutch government. The organization derives its authority from the reputation of its members, each of whom are leading scientists in their own right and who are appointed for life. On 12 September, the Academy will welcome fourteen new members. Among them is Clemens van Blitterswijk, Professor of the Tissue Regeneration research group. Until recently he was also the Scientific Director of the University of Twente’s MIRA research institute. Professor Van Blitterswijk is an authority in the field of regenerative medicine. He has an impressive list of scientific publications and a number of patents to his name. The Twente professor has also been the driving force behind a number of spin-off companies.

Professor Van Blitterswijk is deeply honoured at being invited to join the Academy’s ranks: “My appointment came as a pleasant surprise. Of course, the Academy is a highly prestigious institute and it is pleasing to see that the major investments that the University of Twente is making in the life sciences have once again received national recognition through this appointment of a multidisciplinary scientist from Twente to the biology section of the Royal Netherlands Academy of the Arts and Sciences.”
