Tissue engineers scoop up prizes

1 May 2013

Pamela Habibovic and Clemens van Blitterswijk, both from the Department of Tissue Regeneration, have received awards from European associations in the areas of biomaterials and tissue engineering. The European Society for Biomaterials’ Jean Leray Award has been conferred on Dr Habibovic, while Prof. Van Blitterswijk will receive the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society’s (TERMIS) EU Career Achievement Award, from that organization’s European Chapter.

The Jean Leray Award bestowed on Pamela Habibovic is intended for young researchers who have made outstanding research contributions to the field of biomaterials. The prize includes a plaque and a cash sum. Dr Habibovic will receive the award during the European Conference on Biomaterials, which is to take place in September, in Madrid. Pamela Habibovic, who obtained her PhD in 2005, is a senior lecturer at the Department of Tissue Regeneration.

Clemens van Blitterswijk

Prof. Van Blitterswijk is the first winner of the Career Achievement Award, which is intended for researchers who have made major contributions to the research field over an extended period of time. Clemens van Blitterswijk will collect the award at the TERMIS EU Conference, which is to be held in June, in Istanbul. This prize, too, includes a plaque and a cash sum. Prof. Van Blitterswijk holds a number of posts, including that of Professor of Tissue Regeneration. Until recently he was also the Scientific Director of the University of Twente’s MIRA research institute. Clemens Van Blitterswijk received the Jean Leray Award in 1987.
