University of Twente students Sander Haase, Tim Hilbers and Marco de Visser have been nominated for the eighth round of the Shell Bachelor Master Awards. On Wednesday 13 March, the University of Twente will announce whether these students’ research into sustainable technological innovations has won an award.
Sander Haase has been nominated for the best Master's thesis. He carried out experimental quantitative research to determine the extent to which fluid slip over a bubble mattress is dependent on interface geometry. There was also a numerical investigation into how this affects mass transport. Tim Hilbers in the race for the “Best Bachelor’s Thesis” award. In his research, this student demonstrated that the two main components of biomass (cellulose and lignin) interact with one another during pyrolysis. This has improved our understanding of the requisite process conditions for pyrolysis. Marco de Visser is also competing for the title of “Best Bachelor’s Thesis”. He researched ways of optimizing the gasification of oil derived from biomass (pyrolysis).
About the Shell Bachelor Master Awards Shell is staging the Awards for the eighth time, in collaboration with the University of Twente, Delft University of Technology, and Eindhoven University of Technology. Shell created the Bachelor Master Awards as a way of encouraging young technical talent to carry out research into technological solutions of a sustainable nature. The Awards are intended to motivate these individuals to further hone their skills in this area to the point at which they will soon be able to contribute to much needed technological solutions that will also benefit future generations. Using an “elevator pitch”, the students have to convince the jury and the audience of the quality of their thesis. The winner of the “Best Master’s Thesis” award will receive a prize of 5,000 euros. The prize for the best Bachelor’s thesis is 2,500 euros. The prize awarded by the general public is 1,000 euros.
You have until 12 March to place your vote via this link. The ceremony on Wednesday 13 March is open to anyone who is interested.
