First students make the grade at Twente Graduate School

6 December 2012

Today Thomas Denis, Robert van der Meer and Ruud Oldenbeuving were awarded their certificates on successfully completing Twente Graduate School (TGS). This makes them the first three students to pass TGS, a special University of Twente programme for outstanding students who aspire to a career in scientific research.

In the summer of 2009 it was Ronald Plasterk, then Minister of Education, Culture and Science, who announced the official opening of Twente Graduate School, a programme that combines Master’s education with PhD studies. It is specially designed for outstanding students who aspire to a career in scientific research.

TGS provides students with a stimulating environment to develop both their capacities within their own field and their general academic skills. This enables them to specialize in an area of their choice while broadening their understanding of the social context of technology and research. TGS programmes are designed in close collaboration with the University of Twente’s various research institutes.

Thomas Denis, Robert van der Meer and Ruud Oldenbeuving have the distinction of being the very first PhD students to have completed their studies at Twente Graduate School. On 6 December, all three of them were awarded a certificate. They took the Advanced Optics programme headed by Professor Willem Vos of the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology. In the short term, they are looking forward to defending their dissertations and obtaining their doctorates.
