1 NOVEMBER T/M 7 JANUARI Visual artists Daniela Flores Magon and Jacomijn Schellevis have found each other in their interest on Mexican traditional culture. Flores Magon, who was born in Mexico and studied art there, lives in the Netherlands since 2008. She loves showing her Mexican culture to the Dutch community and also enjoys interacting with Dutch artists and culture. Schellevis is a Dutch artist who has spent several periods in Mexico, investigating its unique and special tradition related with death. For this exhibition these artists collaborate showing a Mexican ‘Ofrenda’ of the Day of the Death. This old celebration takes place November 1st and 2 nd and is rooted in the belief that the dead people come back from their world to enjoy the things they used to like when they were alive. Their families and friends honor them by bringing food, decorated sugar skulls and their favorite things to a warm and colorful altar. Both artists want to share with the UT-community and others their own ideas about this authentic and still alive Mexican tradition. The opening is on Thursday 1 November 16 o’clock in the Vrijhof with live music, the colorful skeletons ‘Catrinas’ and ‘Pan de Muerto’ with hot chocolate. |
