The University of Twente's digital archive (UTpublications), that members of the university's academic staff can use to post scholarly articles online, is a world leader. This was revealed in The Ranking Web of World Repositories, created by the Spanish company Cybermetrics Lab. UTpublications came tenth in the list of institutional repositories, making it the highest ranking institution in the Netherlands. Open Access Publishing is rapidly gaining ground in the academic world. Researchers use this system to make their scholarly articles available online, for everyone, free of charge. It is based on the idea that the results of academic research should be made available to the widest possible audience, to harness the knowledge obtained for the good of society. Moreover, this serves the interests of academics, as it increases the visibility of their publications, hence also the number of citations. HIGHEST RANKING IN THE NETHERLANDSLike many other academic institutions, the University of Twente maintains a repository (better known as UTpublications) where academics can post their publications. Twice a year, the Spanish company Cybermetrics Lab assesses the visibility and impact of the repositories maintained by academic organizations throughout the world. In the most recent assessment, UTpublications ranked tenth in the world (out of 1120), making it the highest ranking institution in the Netherlands. SHOWCASEMaarten van Bentum, of the Library and Archive Service Centre, is delighted about this high rating. "The University of Twente sees UTpublications as a showcase that we can use to display our output of knowledge. The launch was in 2002, making it one of the first of its kind in the Netherlands. We make every effort to encourage our researchers to publish their articles through this system. Currently about 70 percent of our output of scholarly articles is incorporated into UTpublications, a percentage that is growing year on year. UTpublications currently contains well over 15,000 Open Access academic publications." MORE INFORMATIONYou can find UTpublications, the University of Twente's repository, here.
