https://www.utwente.nl/en/events/2024/3/1292516/the-power-of-shell-and-other-multinationals
Shell became big through oil and gas, processed or traded in 70 countries. In the book Hoog spel, de politieke biografie van Shell Marcel Metze describes the ways in which Shell operated during more than 130 years. Skilled in dealing with very different regimes, from democratic to dictatorial. Faced with corruption, war and terrorism, Shell always managed to survive. But does it still succeed today, now environmental and human rights activists state it is a wrong company? At the UT critics are demanding that the university breaks with Shell. Dr Marcel Metze gives a history of Shell's political ways and shortcuts. He is a renowned investigative journalist and editor-in-chief of The Investigative Desk. Dr Huub Ruel, specialised in Business Diplomacy/Corporate Governance & Ethics (UT) will discuss the role and influence of large companies in our world. How can society and government gain and maintain control? In cooperation with Green Hub Twente, KIVI Students Twente, Sirius and Scientist Rebellion.2024-03-26T18:30:00+00:00Fables and facts about running

https://www.utwente.nl/en/events/2024/4/1293226/rituals-around-death
While the Egyptians buried their pharaohs in impressive pyramids, today we – for example – scatter ashes of our loved ones in a special place. Rituals around dying and burial are as old as mankind. How we deal with death varies greatly by time and culture. Dr Brenda Mathijssen (University of Groningen) did her PhD on contemporary rituals surrounding death. Karen Hof (Hof Uitvaart & Zorg) works in Twente as a personal bereavement coach, guiding people and their loved ones through their final journey. Moderator: Linda Hiemstra BA (Saxion).2024-04-11T18:00:00+00:00Women in Data Science Week

https://www.utwente.nl/en/events/2024/4/1293244/philofilm-on-chaos-movie-discussion
Chaos is the theme of this year’s month of philosophy. Together with study association Ideefiks and Concordia we selected a rather chaotic movie: Synecdoche, New York. Philosopher dr. Nolen Gertz (UT) will give a short introduction on this movie. A theatre director (played by Philip Seymour Hoffman) struggles with his work, and the women in his life, as he creates a life-size replica of New York City inside a warehouse as part of his new play. It’s the first movie director and writer Charlie Kaufman made. This SG is open for everybody, please buy a ticket via www.concordia.nl. Students of Ideefiks and other students get a discount.2024-04-16T17:30:00+00:00Boat Reveal 2024 | Solar Boat Twente

https://www.utwente.nl/en/events/2024/4/1293253/birdwatching-with-arjan-dwarshuis
Even as a boy, Arjan Dwarshuis used his grandfather's binoculars to peer at birds. That fascination remained. The parental backyard became the entire globe. In 2016, he even broke the world record for observing as many different bird species as possible in one year: he counted 6,852! Arjan Dwarshuis makes the popular Vogelspotcast, has written several books and is an enthusiastic zealot for the importance of birds. He talks about flight techniques, food preferences, mate choice, migration, in short about the life of a number of birds and why they are so valuable for our nature and biodiversity. Afterwards, he will sign his books. In cooperation with Green Hub Twente.2024-04-23T17:30:00+00:00Lecture in Twents, there's nothing wrong with that!

David Hordijk is a student when he quits his studies and sets out to walk from the Netherlands to Finisterre, the ‘end of the world’ and goal of the pilgrim’s route of Santiago de Compostella. He tells about this 2,500 mile walk and whether he succeeded in detaching himself of all the routines of everyday life. He had plenty meaningful and funny encounters. Through crowdfunding he raised money to ensure that he would find his own piano on the cliffs of Finisterre. You will hear his own compositions, see beautiful images and hear his exceptional story. Did he return more inspired?2024-05-21T10:45:00+00:00Week of inspiration / Wanted: climate optimists!
https://www.utwente.nl/en/events/2024/5/1294193/week-of-inspiration-wanted-climate-optimists
Sometimes you lose all courage when you think about rising global temperatures. Will the world act fast enough? Or will we perish from floods, heat or famine? Maartje Bregman is a climate optimist, a greenfluencer who gives hope: even with small individual actions you can do something good together. On sustainability and climate, inequality and injustice. Her positive approach counterbalances the negative tenor of a sustainable life in which you have to deny yourself everything: you should not fly, skip meat, leave the car at home. With her enthusiastic performances and on social media, she emphasises precisely what you can do. Dutch ESA-astronaut André Kuipers lived and worked for 204 days in the International Space Station. What is it like to live in space for such a long time? How did it change Kuipers’ worldview? According to Kuipers we are in fact all astronauts, on a fragile spaceship, called Earth. What valuable insights does space travel provide us, so that we can take better care of our planet? And what will the future bring; sustainable rockets and a manned mission to Mars? In cooperation with KIVI Students Twente, Arago and Space Society Twente.2024-05-22T10:45:00+00:00Week of Inspiration / Who will be the next President of the USA?
https://www.utwente.nl/en/events/2024/5/1294239/week-of-inspiration-who-will-be-the-next-president-of-the-usa
Skirmishes over the US presidential election in November 2024 have been dominating the news in the last years. Who will succeed Joe Biden as the 47th president? Biden again? Or will Donald Trump survive all court charges and rise again? Or will a new candidate surprise us? The elections are important because America is a very dominant country. Eelco Bosch van Rosenthal gives a current state of affairs. He is a distinguished journalist who studied American studies, was NOS correspondent in the US for many years and made the television series Droomland Amerika (2016) and De slag om Texas (2020) in the run-up to earlier elections. In cooperation with Sirius.2024-05-22T17:30:00+00:00Week of inspiration / Digital detox - a philosophy of digital abstinence
https://www.utwente.nl/en/events/2024/5/1294255/week-of-inspiration-digital-detox-a-philosophy-of-digital-abstinence
Are we all turning into smartphone zombies? This pressing question is posed by philosopher Hans Schnitzler in his book Digital detox (2023). As an experiment, he had students undergo a week-long digital detox. Their testimonies raise uncomfortable and fundamental questions about our relationship to the screen world. 'I only now realise how numb I am all the time,' one of his students declared. Is the smartphone actually still at the service of us, or are we at the service of the smartphone?2024-05-23T10:45:00+00:00Week of Inspiration / The last spring of the dinosaurs
https://www.utwente.nl/en/events/2024/5/1294274/week-of-inspiration-the-last-spring-of-the-dinosaurs
Tyrannosaurus rex and Brachiosaurus. Their names sound familiar, yet we only know what their bones tell us about them. Why are we so fascinated by these giants and why does their mass extinction intrigue us so much? Paleontologist Melanie During MSc (PhD-candidate Uppsala University) discovered that the meteorite that caused the dinosaurs to go extinct must have struck in spring, 66 million years ago. How did she make this stunning discovery? During is author of the Dutch book De laatste lente van de dinosauriërs.2024-05-23T17:30:00+00:00NVBMB Spring Meeting 2024
