Changes to the premaster programme starting September 2013
Premaster (HBO students)
As of September 1, 2013 you can apply for our new premaster programme Communication Studies (CS) of 30 ECTS at de University of Twente. The premaster programme has two (2) terms of enrolment (September and February).
As a Bachelor’s student from a university of applied sciences (HBO), you can apply for admission to our one year Master’s programme Communication Studies. In order to gain and/or improve the knowledge and skills needed to start our Master’s programme it is necessary to follow an additional pre-Master’s programme of 30 ECTS credits which you have to pass in order to gain admission to the Master’s programme. Admission to the pre-Master’s programme largely depends on your previous academic results and study programme.
There are two routes for HBO students, depending on where you have studied:
1) |
Students studying at Saxion can begin the transfer during their HBO studies |
2) |
All other HBO students begin the transfer after completing their HBO studies. |
Transferring from university of applied sciences (HBO) to Communication Studies
Students with a bachelor’s degree from a university of applied sciences (HBO) do not fulfil all the admission requirements. In certain cases the CS admission committee may offer students the option to do a pre-Master’s programme to fulfil the admission requirements.
Conditions for qualifying for the pre-master’s programme
Completion of a HBO programme in to a field related to Communication Studies. Some of the specialisations of the Master’s programme will only admit you to the specialisation that is most directly related to the curriculum of your Bachelor’s programme. This is because the domain you studied does not provide an adequate foundation of knowledge for the other specialisations.

Required pre-university level (VWO) Mathematics A and English
We will assume that you will be able to demonstrate proficiency in mathematics (Mathematics A1, 2 or B1 Phase II under the old VWO system) and English-language at pre-university level. It is your own responsibility to attain sufficient proficiency in Mathematics A and English (for options, refer to e.g. the TCP Language Centre).
If you hesitate regarding mathematics you can follow an additional Mathematics A or B course at the James Boswell Institute, Open Universiteit, Saxion Mathematics course for programmes in non-technical subjects or the UT Mathematics A course.
Transfer from Saxion Hogeschool
The University of Twente has an agreement with Saxion Hogeschool regarding the pre-Master’s programme. Saxion students enrolled in relevant programmes may, under certain very strict circumstances, take the pre-Master’s programme during their Bachelor’s studies as a transfer minor. The minor is taught entirely in English. Students must meet the following criteria to be admitted:
1) |
All first-year coursework + 60EC second year complete; |
2) |
Among the top 20% of students in the programme. |
Admission to MSc programme Communication Studies
In order to be admitted to the MSc programme, you must complete the transfer minor/pre-Master’s programme within 12 months. There is one exam and one re-sit per subject.
The specialisations Media and Communication, Corporate Communication and Marketing Communication have two (2) terms of enrolment (September and February). The specialisation Technical Communication has one term of enrolment, namely September.
