Final event of the HTAS Connected Cruise Control Project

The final event of the HTAS Connected Cruise Control project will be held in Helmond, the 26th of March.
Theme of the event: "Reducing congestion using Connected Cruise Control". Connected Cruise Control system is the first of its kind system, aiming to give tactical driving advice on headway, speed and lane choice based on downstream traffic flow conditions. The HTAS project Connected Cruise Control has developed and demonstrated the CCC system in real traffic. The backbone of the overall system implementation was an in-vehicle telematics platform with GPRS communication with a back office system collecting and processing traffic data. The traffic flow prediction and driver advice module were successfully implemented as well the Human Machine Interface in the vehicle. Drivers highly appreciate the CCC advice and traffic flow simulations show potential delay reductions up to some 30%. ... read more

Verkeer, Vervoer en Ruimte prijswinnaar op het Nationaal Verkeerskunde Congres 2012!

Op het Nationaal Verkeerskunde Congres 2012, afgelopen woensdag 31 oktober 2012 gehouden in de Brabanthallen in Den Bosch, heeft Luc Wismans met zijn paper "De meerwaarde van dynamisch rekenen aan emissies" (co-auteur Robert van den Brink van Goudappel) de prijs gewonnen van de "Beste bijdrage Nationaal Verkeerskunde Congres 2012". De jury was lovend over de goede koppeling van theorie, verkeersmodellen en praktijk. Zijn bijdrage werd als beste beoordeeld uit de 73 bijdragen die werden gepresenteerd, en die op hun beurt weer waren geselecteerd uit meer dan 130 aanmeldingen. Aan het eind van de dag heeft Martin van Maarseveen (oud hoogleraar VVR en tegenwoordig werkzaam bij het ITC) Luc de prijs mogen uitreiken als voorzitter van de begeleidingscommissie (bokaal plus bloemen). ... read more

Luc Wismans promoveerde 27 september aan de Universiteit Twente op een studie naar het optimaliseren van verkeerstromen. Zijn conclusies: het op strategische plaatsen tegenhouden van verkeer is in de regel een effectieve strategie voor meerdere beleidsdoelstellingen. Werken aan bereikbaarheid, luchtkwaliteit en klimaat gaat prima samen, maar wel ten koste van verkeersveiligheid en geluidhinder. CTS biedt opnieuw vak Railtransport aan

De Universiteit Twente biedt in februari 2013 voor de tweede keer het vak Railtransport aan. Het gaat om een keuzevak van de Engelstalige masteropleiding Civil Engineering and Management. Daarvoor is samengewerkt met de afdeling Mobiliteit van ingenieursbureau ARCADIS.

Het vak Railtransport belicht alle aspecten van spoorvervoersystemen. Dit loopt uiteen van vervoersvraag tot rollend materieel en van tram tot hogesnelheidslijnen. Het accent ligt daarbij op de infrastructuur. Het vak wordt in het Engels gegeven. ... read more

CTS at the DTA Sympostium, Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, USA

On 5 June, Dr. Jing Bie gave a presentation on day-to-day traffic dynamics at the 4th International Symposium on Dynamic Traffic Assignment (DTA), held on Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, USA. The talk is based on his recent paper Extending Prospect Theory for Modeling Day-to-day Traffic Dynamics: risk aversion and equilibrium stability, co-authored with CTS staff Jaap Vreeswijk and Prof. Eric van Berkum. This paper investigate the over-day route choice behaviour of travellers. It shows that risk aversion contributes to network stability. Moreover, insensitivity of travellers (“indifference band”) implies that changes applied to the network have to pass certain thresholds in order to cause any behavioural reactions. ... read more

KNAW supports collaboration between Netherlands and Indonesia

The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) awarded a research project on the local and regional dimensions in Indonesia’s social and economic development from the Free University Amsterdam (Dept. of Spatial Economics), the University of Twente (Centre for Transport Studies), University of Indonesia and the Bandung Institute of Technology within the Scientific Programme Indonesia - Netherlands (SPIN). This programme supports long-term collaboration between researchers and research consortiums in Indonesia and the Netherlands. The project comprises three PhD projects and examines the complex interrelationships between governance, economic and regional development, urban transport infrastructure investments, urban poverty and social inclusion. The start of a new mobility panel for the Netherlands

The Centre for Transport Studies, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment and transport consultancy firm Goudappel Coffeng started a new mobility panel: the Mobility Panel for the Netherlands (MPN). NWO awarded a new research project from CTS

A mobile mobility panel for the Netherlands
NWO awarded a new research project from the Centre for Transport Studies, the Dutch Mobile Mobility Panel. In this project, CTS will examine if GPS-enabled mobile phones are an effective and efficient method for collecting travel behaviour data, and examine the variability and stability in individual travel behaviour and accessibility over time. A 3-year field experiment will be conducted in which multiple-week travel behaviour data will be collected of several hundred Dutch residents. On the 23rd and 24th of November, 2010, TRAIL, the Netherlands Research School on Transport, Infrastructure and Logistics held its 11th biannual congress at WTC Rotterdam. During the congress, Anthony Ohazulike from the Centre for Transport Studies, University of Twente won an award for the best scientific paper in the first year category of PhD students. The title of the award paper is: Multi-objective road pricing – A Cooperative and Competitive Bilevel Optimization Approach. Attached to the award is a price of €500.
