Workshop/Masterclass Implementation of ICT in construction

About 20 project and information managers of large principals, construction firms and leading engineering concultancy firms and knowledge institutes gathered together on January 28, 29 and 30 to discuss the future of ICT in the Dutch construction industry. This work was organized by Twente University in cooperation with CIFE (Stanford University) and the BIR (the Dutch Building Information Council). Workshop leaders were Martin Fischer of Stanford and Ben Schwegler of Walt Disney Imagineering. The aim was to design an effective implementation of ICT between firms in construction projects.

First, examples and lessons learned from other industries were looked at. Ben Schwegler of Walt Disney Imagineering is worldwide responsible for all engineering and construction activities of Walt Disney. For a number of years this firm has used intensively BIM (Building Information Models) tools for building and renovation of their parks. Experiences with BIM of one project are used in the next project. Examples of the implementation of ICT in the Port of Rotterdam and Thales showed that the Dutch construction industry takes the right strategy in implementing ICT between firms in construction projects.

Secondly, the participants of the workshop designed together with Martin Fischer and Ben Schwegler a concrete implementation-strategy within their own firm or organization. The participants got concrete tools that could be applied immediately when implementing BIM, workflow management and e-commerce systems.

Workshop/Masterclass Invoering van ICT in de bouw

Twintig projectleiders en informatiemanagers van opdrachtgevers, grote bouwbedrijven, toonaangevende ingenieursbureaus en kennisinstellingen kwamen op 28, 29 en 30 januari bijeen om zich te beraden op de toekomst van ICT in de Nederlandse bouw. Deze workshop werd georganiseerd door de Universiteit Twente in samenwerking met CIFE (Stanford University) en de BIR (Bouw Informatie Raad). Workshopleiders waren Martin Fischer van Stanford en Ben Schwegler van Walt Disney Imagineering. Doel was om tot een effectieve implementatie van ICT tussen organisaties (of bedrijfsonderdelen) in bouwprojecten te komen.

Daarbij is ten eerste gekeken naar ervaringen in andere sectoren. Ben Schwegler van Walt Disney Imagineering is wereldwijd verantwoordelijk voor alle engineering en bouwactiviteiten van Walt Disney. Dit bedrijf maakt al vele jaren intensief gebruik van BIM (Bouw Informatie Modellen) tools bij nieuwbouw en renovatie van hun parken. BIM ervaringen van het ene project worden opgeslagen en meegenomen naar het volgende project. Voorbeelden van ICT-implementaties in de Rotterdamse haven en Thales geven aan dat de bouw op de goede weg is.

Ten tweede hebben de deelnemers met Martin Fischer en Ben Schwegler gewerkt aan een concrete ICT implementatie-strategie binnen hun eigen bedrijf of instelling. De deelnemers hebben concrete tools aangereikt gekregen die direct toegepast kunnen worden voor de invoering van BIM, workflow management of e-commerce systemen.
