Service provisioning for homecare
Interoperability and integration of homecare services
Description of research
The U-care project is developing a flexible homecare services platform to support independent living of elderly. Homecare systems, such as medication-dispensers, action reminders, videophones, vital signs monitoring devices, and location/motion sensors, can play an important role in realizing this. Unfortunately, the adoption of home-care systems is hindered by the fact that there are many types of devices, infrastructures and application solutions, which are hard to configure, connect and integrate. My approach to this problem is to develop interoperability solutions based on services, where individual services can encapsulate some basic care-related functionality implemented with appropriate technologies and accessible through standard interfaces, and where different peer services can be repeatedly composed to form some useful higher level service. Communication between peer services at any level should be supported by a homecare-services bus capable of coping with different communication types such as calls, events and streams.
