Design of Dependable Systems based on Health Monitoring

Description of research:

Availability and reliability are two key metrics for dependability. In the anticipated STARS systems, a high dependability is of crucial importance. We intend to increase this by identifying potential problems that are harmful to the operation of the system as soon as possible. Reliability is directly related to environmental conditions in which the components operate. We intend to use sensors (i.e. health monitors) in the STARS components themselves, which monitor the environmental parameters periodically. Relevant data will be collected in a subset of reconfigurable processors, to provide a reliability hazard evaluation. This data will be used to reconfigure hardware (or recalibrate) or change system parameters (e.g. clock frequency) in order to reduce the reliability hazard. The approach can be considered as a pre-maintenance measure to improve reliability and availability.
