COST

COST is a long-standing bottom-up mechanism that facilitates coordination and exchanges between nationally funded scientists and research teams in a variety of research fields. The programme exists since 1971. COST only pays for coordination activities, not for the research itself. Currently, initiatives are taken to improve the accessibility of the programme, to make it more transparent and competitive, as well as more efficient and effective, especially for FP7. The Committee of Senior Officiaks of COST had decided to launch an Open Call for all domains. Deadline of pre-proposals is 31 May 2006. Full proposals are due at the end of the year, projects will start early 2007.

Senter/EG-Liaison organize an information meeting: “Een nieuwe COST, een nieuwe call”. It will be held on May 2, 2006 in Utrecht. Registration costs: 25 €. For more information see Senter/EG-Liaison website.

SMART MIX

Smart Mix is a new research programme of the Dutch government with an annual budget of 100 M-€. It is an initiative of the Ministeries of Economic Affairs, and Education, Culture & Sciences, the administration has been delegated to SenterNovem and NWO. The programme fosters cooperation between industry, knowledge institutes and social services institutions.

Smart Mix has two related objectives, on which proposals will be selected:

o

Reinforcement of focus and mass in excellent scientific research

o

Societal and economic value creation / valorisation

Project proposals should typically be about 3-10 M-€ / year, depending on scientific discipline. Project duration: 4-8 years. The maximum subsidy will be 60% of the estimated eligible project costs.

Deadline short pre-proposals: 1 September 2006.

Deadline full proposals: 1 December 2006.

Summary

Multimedia Semantic Syndication for Enhanced News Services (MESH) will apply multimedia analysis and reasoning tools, network agents and content management techniques to extract, compare and combine meaning from multiple multimedia sources, and produce advanced personalized multimedia summaries, deeply linked among them and to the original sources to provide end users with an easy-to-use “multimedia mesh” concept, with enhanced navigation aids. A step further will empower users with the means to reuse available content by offering media enrichment and semantic mixing of both personal and network content, as well as automatic creation from semantic descriptions. Encompassing all the system, dynamic usage management will be included to facilitate agreement between content chain players (content providers, service providers and users). In a sentence, the project will create multimedia content brokers acting on behalf of users to acquire, process, create and present multimedia information personalized (to user) and adapted (to usage environment). These functions will be fully exhibited in the application area of news, by creation of a platform that will unify news organizations through the online retrieval, editing, authoring and publishing of news items.

MIMO in Mass-Market: Shifting the MIMO paradigm towards robustness and low cost Project Manager: Prof. dr. ir. C.H. Slump

Summary

The mass-market for communication electronics requires cheap and energy-efficient solutions with a high relibility, taking into account increasing mutual interference. These solutions are expected to be found in effectively combining the technical possibilities in the RF and BB part of the radio receiver, and the system and implementation work. The design paradigm of products in a mass market seems to shift to (1) adaptive repression of interference, in which (2) adaptivity is partly realised in the RF frontend.

Goal of the project is to gain design knowledge (FR/BB co-design) of wireless communication systems, with a focus on adaptive RF and adaptive algorithms for repression of interference. One is especially interested in MIMO (multiple input multiple output) technology, e.g., the use of multiple antennas on the sending, as well as on the receiving side. The intention is to design and build a flexible demonstrator.
