Information 3rd attempt

THIRD ATTEMPT REGULATION

According to the Education and Examination Regulations, any student who failed to pass a course so far and wants to take the examination for the third time should obtain permission to do so from the examination board.

This should take place by submitting a request, which must be signed by the study adviser and the teacher of the course, accompanied by a letter of motivation including reflection and a work plan, and a study plan. It is important for the student to act as early as in the first week of the quarter. However, he/she should contact – not later than six weeks before the date of re-examination – the teacher and the study adviser, and submit a request for examination registration to the examination board not later than five workdays before the end of the examination registration period. Only after permission from the examination board is obtained, it will be possible to register for the course in question.

Method / procedure

Time schedule

Action

It is essential to act in the first week of the quarter*

However, contact must be made not later than 6 weeks before the re-examination.

-

Reflect on what went right/wrong in the previous two attempts.

-

Think of a work plan with regard to how you will prepare for the examination this time with a view to passing the course, taking into account the results of your reflections.

-

Fill in the form "third attempt". To this form, annex your letter which should clearly demonstrate your motivation as well as the fact that you drew up a work plan on the basis of your reflections. In addition, you have to indicate - as far as possible - which courses you intend to take during this academic year.

-

Next, make an appointment with the teacher and the study adviser. It is important to follow a proper study approach right from the start of the teaching period. Therefore, it is recommended to contact the teacher and the study adviser as early as in the first week of the quarter. However, you must have contacted the study adviser and the teacher to discuss your letter of motivation 6 weeks before the re-examination at the latest.

-

After having dealt with any feedback, have the "third attempt" form signed by both the teacher and the study adviser.

Not later than 5 workdays before end of examination registration.

-

Submit the signed form + letter of motivation to the secretariat of the examination board. Both the study adviser and the teacher can advise the examination board.

asap

-

The examination board will deal with your request and inform you and BOZ on the result and on how you can register. Then BOZ will inform the study adviser and the teacher.

*If this concerns a course that was taught in the preceding quarter, you should act as soon as the result of your examination is made known. In addition to the actions mentioned above, we ask you to have a look at the examination you did, and to analyse your shortcomings. Please incorporate this into your work plan.

Important!

-

You are responsible yourself for this process. Even if late results, schedules, dates of examination meetings and the like cause a difficult time schedule.

-

You will have to be able to make a reasonable case for yourself for having exerted yourself for the course if you want to be considered for tutoring.

-

Change of course code, change of name etc. are irrelevant. It is the identity of the course that counts.

-

It is advisable to be meticulous about the two attempts you have.

-

For a next examination attempt (4, 5, etc.) you always contact the study adviser.

-

You have to submit a request for a third attempt per course, so do not include more than one course in a request.

-

The examination board may include in its consideration the fact that you are submitting/have submitted requests for more than one course.

-

This regulation concerns written examinations, and possibly oral examinations as well. For projects, practicals, other rules apply.

-

It is compulsory to register for examinations via OSIRIS. You may deregister via OSIRIS until the start of the examination period. After that – until 24 hours before the examination – you have to deregister via the central desk of Student Services via studentservices@utwente.nl . If you have not deregistered, the registration will count as an attempt. It is prohibited to make the examination without registering.
