General information

Gert-Jan Hospers (Enschede, 1974) teaches Economic Geography at the University of Twente. Since 2009 he holds a special chair in Place Marketing at the Radboud University Nijmegen. In 1999 Gert-Jan graduated in economics, public policy and law at the universities of Tilburg, Twente and Utrecht. After a job at the Ministry of Economic Affairs Gert-Jan returned to the University of Twente in 2000 to teach economics. In 2004 he defended his PhD-thesis Regional Economic Change in Europe: A Neo-Schumpeterian Vision. Gert-Jan is editorial board member of Geografie and European Spatial Research and Policy and associate editor of the open access journal Regional Studies, Regional Science, while he used to be an editor of Regional Insights and Regions. Gert-Jan is senior member of the Netherlands Institute of Government. In 2012 he was appointed as a Fellow of the Regional Studies Association (FeRSA).

Expertise and research

Gert-Jan is interested in urban and regional development in North West Europe with a preference for the peri­phery. Since 2000 he has studied creative cities, regional innovation, place marketing and population decline. Gert-Jan has explored several regions, for example East Netherlands, the Ruhr Area, the North of England and the Copenhagen Malmö Region. At present he is working with Linköping University on a three year research project (2015-2017) on population decline in four Dutch and Swedish regions, funded by the Swedish Research Council Formas. Over the past decade Gert-Jan has written columns and reports for magazines and newspapers, including Opinieblad Forum and Het Financieele Dagblad. Today he is a columnist for Stadswerk Magazine and De Twentsche Courant Tubantia.

Teaching and speaking

In Twente Gert-Jan has taught courses in the field of (regional) economics, innovation and policy. He now contributes to the modules Regional Innovation and Smart Cities as well as Gebiedsontwikkeling. In Nijmegen he teaches Stedelijke Economie and City- en Regiomarketing. At the HAWK Göttingen Gert-Jan gives seminars in the German-speaking Master Regionalmanagement und Wirt­schafts­förderung. He also contributes to the Master of Strategic Urban Studies, Master City Developer and NEPROM Masterclass Conceptontwikkeling. At speakers agency Assemblee he can be booked for talks. Gert-Jan’s presentations are usually based on his books Krimp! (2010), Er gaat niets boven citymarketing (2011), Geografie en gevoel (2013) and Visies op de stad (2015).
