General information

Gert-Jan Hospers (Enschede, 1974) teaches Economic Geography at the University of Twente. Since 2009 he holds a special chair in Place Marketing at the Radboud University Nijmegen. In 1999 Gert-Jan graduated in economics, public policy and law at the universities of Tilburg, Twente and Utrecht. After a job at the Ministry of Economic Affairs Gert-Jan returned to the University of Twente in 2000 to teach economics. In 2004 he defended his PhD-thesis Regional Economic Change in Europe: A Neo-Schumpeterian Vision. Gert-Jan is editorial board member of Geografie and European Spatial Research and Policy as well as associate editor of the open access journal Regional Studies, Regional Science. Before, he was one of the editors of Regional Insights and Regions. Gert-Jan is senior member of the Netherlands Institute of Government and in 2012 he was appointed as a Fellow of the Regional Studies Association (FeRSA).

Expertise and research

Gert-Jan is interested in urban and regional development in North West Europe with a preference for the peri­phery. Since 2000 he has studied creative cities, regional innovation, place marketing and population decline. Gert-Jan has explored several regions, for example Twente, Northern Netherlands, the Ruhr Area, the Copenhagen Malmö Region and the North of England. In 2007 and 2008 Gert-Jan reported on smart European cities for the Slimme Steden-series in Het Financieele Dagblad. He also wrote columns for magazines and newspapers, including De Twentsche Courant Tubantia. At present, he is a columnist for Stadswerk Magazine. In 2015 Gert-Jan will start with a three year research project on population decline in Dutch and Swedish regions, funded by the Swedish Research Council Formas.

Teaching and speaking

In Twente Gert-Jan coordinates the EPA-module Regional Innovation and Smart Cities and contributes to the modules Gebiedsontwikkeling and Strategy, Marketing and Economics. In Nijmegen he teaches the courses Stedelijke Economie and City- en Regiomarketing. Gert-Jan also gives seminars in the Master Regionalmanagement und Wirtschaftsförderung at the HAWK Göttingen (Germany) and the postgraduate programmes Master of Strategic Urban Studies, Master City Developer and NEPROM Masterclass Conceptontwikkeling. At speakers agency Assemblee he can be booked for talks. Gert-Jan’s presentations are based on his books Krimp! (2010), Er gaat niets boven citymarketing (2011), Geografie en gevoel: wat plekken met ons doen (2013) and Zee+land: de kracht van kustregio’s (2014).
