Procedure extra attempt

Procedure Advanced Technology regarding exams and resits

In the Bachelor Course and Examination Regulations (CER – appendix of the programme guide) there have been some changes regarding exams and resits. This document describes the number of attempts per exam that students are entitled to, and the procedure for requesting an extra attempt. It also explains the objectives of these changes in the CER.

A maximum of two attempts per subject

Students used to have a maximum of three attempts per subject, though this rule was not enforced actively. Now the number of attempts has been reduced to two for a number of reasons. The most important reasons are:

·

An improvement of the didactic process

The didactic process is improved considerably when the student receives feedback on the gaps in his knowledge and skills. It should be clear to the student why he failed an exam, and which are the main problem areas (content, skills, study skills, motivation/commitment). This feedback can be given either during a plenary exam review or during an individual meeting with the lecturer.

·

Better study-planning

By setting a limit to the number of attempts, students will have to be more aware of their options when making a study plan. They need to be fully committed to the subjects in said study plan because yet another resit can no longer be taken for granted.

Procedure:

·

If a student does not pass an exam at the second (third, fourth etc.) attempt, he/she must start the ‘third attempt procedure’. A format is available from the website.

·

The student contacts the lecturer in order to:

o

review and discuss the exam

o

determine points for improvement/problem areas

The points for improvement/problem areas can be related to the content of the subject but also to (study) skills and attitude.

·

The student writes an ‘implementation plan’, a format is available on the programme’s website (it will also be included in the programme guide). The plan includes:

o

Points for improvement/problem areas

o

An indication of the amount of time needed to tackle the problem areas.

o

A semester plan for the semester in which the student plans to resit the exam.

·

The student has the implementation plan (form) signed by the lecturer

·

The student makes an appointment with the study advisor to discuss the implementation plan and semester plan.

·

The student hands the plan (form) in to the board of examiners (via S&OA TNW, HR-Z204) to apply for an extra attempt

·

The board of examiners makes a decision regarding the student’s application

·

The student is informed of the board’s decision by the student administration (by e-mail) and the blockade in Osiris is lifted, so that the student can register for that exam.

PLEASE NOTE:

1.

The above procedure needs to be completed before the period for exam registration closes!

2.

If you decide to sit an exam that you have not registered for, chances are that you will be removed from the exam hall and even if you do manage to write the exam, it might not be graded, and no result will be registered in Osiris.
