Expert Workshop, Values in Translational Research
donderdag 22 november 2012, 9:00 - 23:59
In recent years, ‘translational research’ (or ‘translational medicine’) has become a buzz-word in the biomedical domain. Translational research has been proposed as a way to achieve a more effective move (‘translation’) from scientific insights to relevant and useful applications in health care, and ultimately to health benefits. The surge of interest in ‘translation’ can be understood as an attempt to ensure that (public) funding for biomedical research results in value creation (in a broad sense), and thus may improve the science-society-relationship.
From a societal perspective, timely reflection on the feasibility and desirability of proposed innovations is crucial. Such an early reflection can contribute towards innovations that are ethically acceptable, socially robust and widely used. A well-established method of generating such early reflection is to engage future users and stakeholders early on in the development of new technologies. In the field of translational medicine, however, such early engagement of future users has not received systematic attention yet.
On November 22-23 we will organize an expert workshop to explore whether and how patient involvement could contribute to the development of responsible translational research. International experts from different disciplines will share their insights, experiences and ideas on patient engagement in translational research, based on their particular expertise.
